Charging extra bus fare to invite trouble, warns Obaidul Quader

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday warned that actions will be taken against those involved in charging passengers extra in the name of different special bus services, reports UNB.
“Anarchy in the name of 'Gate Lock' or 'Special Service' won't be tolerated. Actions will be taken against them through conducting mobile court drives,” he told reporters after inspecting a mobile court drive against unfit vehicles at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital.
Earlier, on Tuesday, Dhaka Sarak Paribahan Samity decided not to allow any special bus service in the capital from April 15 as there are allegations that additional fares are being realised from passengers in the guise of such services.
The transport owners have been directed not to charge fare more than what fixed by the government, the minister said. He said some 261 vehicles were dumped in dumping yards and 317 people jailed during mobile court drives against unfit vehicles in the last three months from January.
Besides, a total of 5,564 cases were filed and Tk 8,943,730 realised in fine during the drives, Quader said.
About the draft 'Road Transport Bill, 2017, the minister said there will be a provision of punishment for both transport owners and drivers in case of any accident. The Cabinet has recently approved in principle the draft of the law and it has been sent to the Law Ministry for its vetting," he said.
