Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul, Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) rejoined his office yesterday. However, on Tuesday the HC stayed his suspension order from mayoral post.
He went to “Nagar Bhaban” by riding a battery-powered auto -richshaw yesterday at around 11:20 and took charge of the mayor post at around 11:40.
While talking to the journalists, Mosaddeque Hossain Bulbul said, his first job will be to create a congenial working atmosphere at RCC. He said “It is not possible for a government to survive by neglecting local government”.
He hoped, the government will assist him in assigning all programmes of RCC as it did earlier. Bulbul made the remark after taking the charge of RCC for the third time. He, however, mentioned that he had only 16-month of tenure left but he has a lot of promise to be fulfilled to the city people. In this connection, he said, none of the city people will be deprived from the civic rights and civic facilities until he is in the chair and hoped to finish all his pledges within the short tenure of his Mayorship.
The LGRD ministry on Sunday suspended him, for the second time, saying that a Rajshahi court accepted charge sheets against him in a criminal case.
Bulbul was first suspended on May 7, 2015 by the ministry as he was charge sheeted in three criminal cases, including a murder that occurred during BNP-led 20-party alliance blockade. A Rajshahi court the same year accepted the charges sheets of the cases. Later, Bulbul filed a writ petition with the High Court, challenging the suspension order.
The HC on March 10 last year declared the suspension illegal. The government then moved to the Supreme Court which upheld the HC verdict on March 5 this year.
Bulbul, also president of Rajshahi City BNP, is an accused in 17 cases filed over incidents of arson and violence during the anti-government agitation in 2015. Chargesheets in five of the cases have so far been accepted by courts. He was elected mayor in June 2013.
Meanwhile BSS adds: The state yesterday filed an appeal with the apex court challenging the April 3 High Court order that recently stayed a government notice suspending Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury.
“Chamber Judge Court of the Appellate Division passed ‘not today’ order as it came up for hearing, leaving the matter to be heard on another day,” a court official said.
Ministry of LGRD and Cooperatives on April 2 suspended Ariful for second consecutive time as he was accused in two criminal cases. The High Court however, stated the government order the very next day.
A Habiganj court on December 30, 2014, sent Ariful to jail in a case lodged over murder of former finance minister AMS Kibria. He was also shown arrested in the case lodged over bomb attack on a rally of Awami League leader Suranjeet Sengupta in Sunamganj on June 21, 2004.
