Over 400 Jatiya Party men join Awami League
BHOLA: Over 400 leaders and workers of Bangladesh Jatiya Party (JP) joined Awami League offering floral wreath to Senior Awami League Leader and Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed here yesterday, reports BSS.
President of Bapta Union Parishad BJP (Partho) Sagir Ahmed and General Secretary Monirul Islam were, among others, joined Awami League as they were inspired by the political spirit of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Sagir Ahmed said they have their realization to give the up the ‘politics of violence and anarchy’ run by BJP and the 20-party alliance across Bangladesh. Instead, he said, they want to be a part of the ‘politics of development’ spearheaded by Awami League.
Monirul Islam said they were on the wrong path of politics for long. Their joining to Awami League would not only free them from guilty feeling but also strengthen the government to keep its development pace rolling.
Bhola District Awami League General Secretary and Zila Parishad Chairman Abdul Momin Tulu, Bhola Sadar Upazila Awami League president and Sadar Upazila Chairman Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, district Awami League joint general secretary Zahirul Islam Nakib and other leaders were present.
Construction work of 75 bridges progressing fast
NARSINGDI: The construction work of 75 RCC bridges on different rural roads in six upazilas of the district are progressing satisfactorily, reports BSS.
Relief and Rehabilitation Department is implementing the project at a cost of Taka over 19 crore.
According to the district Relief and Rehabilitation office, of the total bridges (length between 33 to40 feet) under the project, 15 bridges are on different rural roads in Sadar upazila, 3 bridges in Polash upazila, 9 bridges in Shibpur upazila, 18 bridges in Monohardi upazila,13 bridges in Belabo upazila and 17 bridges in Raipura upazila.
About 20 percent works of the project have already been completed and rest of the work would be completed within July next, an official of the department said.
Huge phensidyl seized in Jessore

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized 2,350 bottles of contraband phensidyl in Benapole Port Thana area of the district yesterday.
Subeder Shahidul Islam of 49 Benapole BGB camp said, on secret information, the BGB members halted a Dhaka-bound private car in Benapole bordering area and arrested a suspected drug peddler, Harun-or-Rashid, with 2,350 bottles of phensidyl this morning. A case was filed with Benapole Port police station in this connection.
24 Jamaat men arrested
MEHERPUR: Police arrested 24 leaders and workers of the district unit of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami from Tangramai village under Sadar upazila of the district on Tuesday night, reports BSS.
Sources with the police said they were picked up from a house in the area. Being informed, a team of the police from Sadar Police station conducted a raid at the house of Abdur Razzak around 11pm and nabbed the leaders and activists while holding a secret meeting, said Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury, officer-in-charge (OC), of the police station.
Police also seized some ‘jihadi’ books from the spot.
2 killed in B’baria road crash
Brahmanbaria: Two motorcyclists, including a UP chairman, were killed as a truck hit their bike at Bertala on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Ashuganj upazila on Tuesday night, reports UNB.
Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of Sarail Hatihata Highway Police Station, said the truck knocked down the motorcycle carrying Baki Billah Jewel, 45, chairman of Bholakut union parishad of Nasirnagar upazila and Rony Bhuiyan, 32, joint secretary of the district unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, around 10.20pm, leaving them seriously injured.
They were taken to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital where doctors declared Rony dead.
Jewel died on the way while being moved to Dhaka at night.
