Maize cultivation is gaining popularity day by day in all seven upazilas of the district encouraged by the excellent economic return from cultivating the crop in recent years, reports BSS.
The target of cultivation has been exceeding every year in the district and the farmers have been brought more char land for cultivating the crop.
Though the target of maize cultivation was fixed 15,190 hectares of land in the district, but the farmers cultivated 15,973 hectares of land exceeding the target.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said maize is now the highest cultivated crop in the district.
Easy cultivation process, less irrigation and much demand in the markets is the main cause of popularity of maize cultivation here. The multipurpose use of maize is the main reason behind the cultivation.
After harvesting, the ripen maize is sold in the market round the year. The green leave and immature maize are used as good cow fodder. The stick of the crop is also used as fire wood in the rural areas.
Manir uddin, a maize cultivator of Char Bailjuri village under Ghior upazila, said he cultivated maize on five bighas of land this year. After harvesting the matured maize he is preparing the same land for second time cultivation. Most of the maize cultivators grow maize twice in the same land.
