The bulk of the clubs comparatively formed their ‘balanced’ team for the upcoming Dhaka Premier League by the traditional system of the players’ transfer.
Abahani Limited and Mohammedan Sports Club, dubbed as the traditional superpowers in Club Cricket of Bangladesh, this year formed more compact teams for the first class cricket league, which will get underway on April 12.
Abahani championed 17 times in Dhaka Premier League (DPL), while Mohammedan for ninth times since its inception in 1973-1974 season.
Dhanmondi-based team triumphed the DPL trophy last year after a four-year hiatus. Motijheel-based side on the other hand finished the league with fifth, just after Abahani Limited, Prime Doleshwar Cricket Club, Legends of Rupganj and Victoria Sporting Club. Last time Mohammedan clinched the trophy six years back in 2009-2010 season.
Since the last week of March, both Abahani Limited and Mohammedan SCL like other participating teams began their respective preparation camp with the available local players though in limited scale.
Abahani did their practice at their club’s ground along with ULAB campus ground, whilst Mohammedan set up their base-camp in Fatullah’s Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium.
As per the rules of the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis, Abahani picked all-rounder Mahmudullah Riyad, pacer Taskin Ahmed and youngster Mosaddek Hossain Saikat, while Mohammedan grabbed opener Tamim Iqbal, spinner Taijul Islam and seamer Subashis Roy from the national pool. Pool players apart, Mohammad Mithun, Liton Kumar Das, Sadman Islam Anik, Afif Hossain, Saif Hasan will bolster the batting line-up of Abahani Limited.
BPL sensation Abu Jayed Rahi will join Taskin to strengthen the pace battery and Saqlain Sojib, Sanjamul Islam will showcase themselves with Riyad and Saikat in spinning department.
Expressing the optimism about their current team’s formation for the 2016-2017 season, Abahani cricket committee vice-chairman Jalal Younus said that the team they have formed for the DPL are hopeful of defending their title.
“Abahani have been a balance side,” said Jalal Younus.
“We’ve taken junior and promising players this year. Along with them, three pool players the likes of Mahmudullah Riyad, Taskin Ahmed and Mosaddek Hossain Saikat will be there. Then we have Liton Das, Mohammad Mithun, Saifuddin, Saif Hasan, Afif Hossain. Spinners Saqlain Sojib, Sanzamul Islam, opener Sadman Islam in the line-up. We have also pacer Abu Jayed Rahi in the side,” Younus told The Independent.
“We have in our mind that we are defending champion. We want to defend it,” he added.
When asked if they have confirmed any foreign players, Jalal said that they have decided to fetch overseas player on the basis of some matches not to get any player for the entire league. “It’s very difficult to say at this moment about foreign player. We’ll bring foreign player for match by match. Like the past occasions, we’ve not got any foreign player for the entire league because of their hectic domestic schedule,” he responded. “Along with that, we think that as the registration is opened for the overseas players, so we will bring player or players from foreign arsenal as per the condition of the team actually what type of player or players we required for the match situation,” he added. It is learnt from the club’s insiders that Abahani is bringing in all-rounder Uday Kaul of India for the initial some matches. Apart from that, they are also communicating with some players from Sri Lanka and India.
Mohammedan signed their deal with Kamrul Islam Rabbi, Ebadot Hossain, Sajedul Islam and Amit Kumar Nayan besides Subashis to make stronger their pace attack. Apart from that, they took in-form spin all-rounder Mehedi Hasan Miraj, Taijul Islam, Jubair Hossain Likhon and Enamul Haque (Junior) for their spin battery.
Shamsur Rahman Shuvo, Rony Talukdar, Rokibul Hasan, Avishik Mitra, Saikat Ali will fight with Mohammad Azim, Javed Hossain, besides hard-hitting opener Tamim Iqbal.
Mohammedan head coach Sohel Islam said that they have formed a well-balanced side than the past years.
“We are hopeful about this team because this year we have comparatively formed a well-balanced than the previous years,” said Sohel Islam after their gym session at the National Cricket Academy ground. “If you look at our batting and bowling departments, you will see, we have enough depth in batting and bowling order. Actually we have to execute it in ground. If we could do it then it is obviously possible to play at Super Six stage,” Sohel told media.
