Ex-CU student found dead
A former student of Chittagong University was found hanging at her house at Navy residential area in Chittagong on Sunday midnight.
Abul Bashar, officer-in-charge of EPZ Police Station, said being informed by family, police recovered the body of Sheikh Hamida Farhad Tanti, 27, daughter of Mainuddin Mintu from the Navy Hospital around 12am. Quoting Hamida's father, police said Hamida was a student of Chittagong University of Anthropology Department.
In 2015, Hamida got married to a Navy officer and they have been blessed with a daughter of two years.
Mainuddin Mintu, father of Hamida, is a school teacher by profession and used to live at the Tabalchhari Officer's Quarter in Rangamati Sadar.
The reason behind the incident could not be known immediately and the body was handed over to family after postmortem, said OC.
Elderly woman killed under train
An unidentified elderly woman was crushed to death under the wheels of a Joydebpur bound demo train from Kamlapur Railway Station at Kuril Biswa Road in the capital early yesterday.
The accident occurred around 6 in the morning when the woman aged about 55 was crossing the railway track at Kuril Biswa Road and she died on the spot, sub inspector Akbar Ali of Bimanbandar GRP told BSS.
Police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for autopsy.
An unnatural death (UD) case was lodged to this end.
Three of kidnapping syndicate held
A team of Khulna RAB-6 yesterday arrested three members of a kidnapping syndicate in Khulna on charges of kidnapping youths and extorting ransoms from the victims' families.
The arrested are Md. Ahsan Habib Khan, 43, Md. Ruhul Amin Khan, 42, and Md. Imrul Islam.
“We arrested them this morning from Katakhali bus stand area under Fakirhat upazila in Bagerhat after an investigation,” said Director of RAB-6 and Additional DIG Khondokar Rafiqul Islam, at a press briefing at the RAB headquarters in Labanchara area. He said the anti-elite force started investigation after receiving written allegations from some victims' families.
Astami Snan ends in N’ ganj
The two-day ‘Astami Snan’, one of the religious festivals of Hindu community, ended on the bank of the old Brahmaputra River at Langalbandh under Bandar upazila in Narayanganj on Tuesday afternoon peacefully.
Mahatirtha Langalbandh Astami Snan observance committee sources said the holy bath started on Monday afternoon and continued till Tuesday afternoon.
The other programmes of the day included Basanti Puja, Kirton and other devotional songs at Rajghat.
ADC (general) Jasimuddin Hawladar, Bandar upazila UNO Moushumi Habiba, Additional Superintend of Police Matiur Rahman, president of Mahatirtha Langalbandh Astami Snan observance committee Saroj Kumar Saha and general secretary of Narayanganj City unit of Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad Shipon Sarkar, among others, were present in the closing ceremony of Astami Snan.
Smuggled goods seized
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has recovered a huge quantity of smuggled goods and illegal drugs worth about Taka 98.93 crore from different bordering areas of the country last month, said an official release.
The smuggled goods and contraband items included 15,02,143 pieces of yaba pills, 27,151 bottles of phensidyl, 5.331 kg of heroin, 1, 434 kg of cannabis, 25,350 bottles of foreign liquor, 13,683 pieces of contraband injections, and 17,17,715 pieces of illegal tablets, 11,559 pieces of sarees, 3,375 pieces of three piece, 1,693 meter clothes, 203 readymade dresses,43,445 CFT wood, and 3.200 gram of gold.
BGB personnel also recovered six pistols, six guns, 39 round bullets, four magazines, one mortar-shell, and a hand bomb during the period.
