RAJSHAHI: A video-conferencing meeting here has taken decision for making Rajshahi district free from begging on priority basis, reports BSS.
Abul Kalam Azad, Chief Coordinator (SDG) in Prime Minister's Office, moderated the conferencing meeting held at conference hall of Deputy Commissioner on Monday.
According to the Prime Minister's instruction, the country will be freed from beggar by 2018, he told the meeting. To this end, need-based programmes and strategies were undertaken.
Abul Kalam Azad the country could be beggar free with concerted and sincere efforts of all quarters from their social responsibilities.
A meeting was also held there after the video conferencing discussing ways and means on how to attain the cherished goal.
Commissioner of Rajshahi division Noor-Ur-Rahman, Additional Commissioners Aminul Islam and Sultan Abdul Hamid, Deputy Commissioner Kazi Ashraf Uddin, President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Md Muniruzzaman and social worker Shahin Akhter Rainy addressed the meeting.
Commissioner Noor-Ur-Rahman says begging is a punishable offence according to existing laws of the country. The minimum punishment for begging is three years in prison and the maximum is seven years, to be doubled for a repetition. He also said the government had a rehabilitation project for the beggars, under which each beggar would be given Tk. 20,000 and other necessary paraphernalia for rehabilitation. Noor-Ur-Rahman said “We have many programmes to ensure food security for the people. We believe that we will be successful in implementing the decision to make our country beggar-free.”
He also urged all including district and upazila administration, women affairs officer, social service officers, family planning officers, district registrar, district information officer, and the media men to make the initiative a total success.
