ECNEC nod to Tk 1,353 crore education project

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) yesterday approved the introduction of education through ICT at the Secondary and Higher Secondary level (2nd phase) at an estimated cost of Tk 1,353 crore in a bid to make the use of ICT more time befitting at the secondary and higher secondary level.

The approval came from at the ECNEC meeting held at the NEC conference room at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital with ECNEC chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. Briefing the reporters after the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said that a total of seven projects were approved involving an overall estimated cost of Tk 7,890 crore. "Of the total project cost, Tk 3,876.32 crore will come from the state exchequer while the rest of Tk 4,013.68 crore from project assistance," State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan was present at the briefing.
Of the approved seven projects, six are new while one is revised project. The Planning Minister said that the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education would implement the Introduction of education through ICT at the Secondary and Higher Secondary level (2nd phase) with an estimated cost of Tk 1353 crore to be implemented across the country by June 2020.
The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has implemented the first phase of the Introduction of Education at Secondary and Higher Secondary level project through ICT from January, 2011 to June, 2015 under which some 23,331 educational institutions were provided with laptops, internet modems, and multimedia projectors.
Besides, some 24,204 class teachers, head masters and field-level officials were imparted training on digital content development under the first phase of the project.
The 2nd phase of the project was approved yesterday in a bid to maintain the continuity of the first phase as well as making the use of ICT more time befitting at the Secondary and Higher Secondary level education. The main objectives of the project are modernizing the teaching method at the classes of schools, colleges and madrasas, creating a teachers' resource pool through enhancing the skills of the teachers, integrating the ICT technology with the teaching process.
