Indiscriminate dumping of garbage here and there is polluting the environment of Barisal city, according to a report in this newspaper on Monday. Although the dumping of garbage has been attributed to the strike by garbage collectors and workers of the Barisal City Corporation (BCC), the condition was never that much satisfactory. Why only in Barisal? The same scenario is prevailing in almost all towns and cities of the country.
Overflowing of dustbins and piling of garbage on the roads and neighbourhoods are regular features in the cities and towns. The growing stink owing to the disposed waste adds to the unhygienic situation, making life miserable for the residents.
There are some places where it is difficult to move along the roads without pressing handkerchiefs into noses.
There are unscrupulous people who throw their household garbage on the roads polluting the environment. And there is none to clean the mess.
Plastic bags, papers, tissue papers, cigarette butts, fruit and vegetable skins and other things are thrown indiscriminately. It is not only happening in areas inhabited by poor communities, it is also happening in posh areas where affluent people live. In many developed countries of the world it is mandatory to keep roads, thoroughfares, pavements, parks and other public places neat and clean. Violators of the laws relating to cleanliness have to face music in those countries. So, none dares to disobey laws. But, unfortunately, in our country in the absence of stringent rules and vigilance people behave recklessly.
As the cities and towns have expanded both horizontally and vertically with their burgeoning population, those are also confronted with a myriad of problems. The worsening bad culture of dumping garbage indiscriminately has also assumed a formidable problem. When educated people are devoid of civic sense and behave irresponsibly, what about the others who are deprived of the light of education? These people do not hesitate to ease themselves here and there standing near the roads and pavements not thinking the least that it might pose problems for others.
There are some dustbins but those are not cleaned on a regular basis. As a result, foul smells from those pollute the environment. It is the responsibility of the relevant authorities to clean those regularly. The overall mindset of the people should be changed. Awareness should be generated among people to keep environment neat and clean. Members of the law enforcing agencies, environmentalists and members of the civil society can also play vital roles in this regard.
