The Supreme Court is to hear review petitions filed by war crimes convict, Delawar Hossain Sayedee, and the government against its verdict in the war crimes case. The review pleas have come up in serial number 147 before the four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha. Talking to reporters, attorney-general Mahbubey Alam said the apex court is likely to hear the plea to review the sentence of imprisonment till natural death for Sayedee on April 6. He said the matter came up in yesterday’s (Monday) cause list of the Appellate Division for hearing. "I am hoping that on April 6, the apex court will hear both the review pleas, one filed by Sayedee and the other by the State," the chief law officer of the State added. On the other hand, the defence team is likely to file a time petition before the apex court, seeking more time to prepare for participating in the hearing.
On February 28, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Sayedee to death for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
On March 28 that year, Sayedee filed an appeal before the apex court, seeking acquittal from the charges. The same day, the government side appealed to the Supreme Court for capital punishment for all eight charges against him. On September 17, 2014, the Appellate Division commuted his death sentence to imprisonment till his natural death. On December 31, 2015, the Supreme Court released the full text of its verdict, commuting Sayedee’s death penalty to jail till death. On January 12 last year, the prosecution filed a review petition seeking death penalty for the influential Jamaat leader. On January 17, Sayedee filed a plea seeking review of the SC verdict. In the petition, he sought acquittal from all charges in which he was found guilty.
