Compensation to rise by 3 times

UNB

The Cabinet yesterday approved the draft of the ‘Immovable Asset Acquisition and Requisition Bill, 2017’ keeping a provision of providing a 3-fold compensation to the affected people if the government acquires any land, reports UNB. The approval came from the regular weekly meeting of the Cabinet held at Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. Briefing reporters after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said if the government acquires land then the affected person will get compensation three times higher than its market price.
If any private organisation acquires land in public interest like setting up a school then the affected person would get compensation four times higher than its market price.
Alam said the market price of the acquired land will be calculated on the average selling price of land of the area for one year. There is also a provision in the draft law for acquiring the land of any worship place like mosque, temple, pagoda alongside graveyard, crematorium in case of any indispensable public interest.
Alam said the existing law was basically an ordinance promulgated in 1982 and the Ministry of Land placed the draft bill before the Cabinet in line with the earlier Cabinet decision to transform all the ordinances into acts after translating those into Bangla following a higher court verdict.
He said it was earlier mentioned in the Ordinance that the land of any worship place like mosque, temple, pagoda as well as graveyard, crematorium cannot be acquired. “But, as
per the Section 4(13) of the proposed law, such land could be acquired if it is indispensable in public interest and the persons and organisations willing to acquire would relocate or rebuild those with their own funds,” he added.
Ministers, state ministers, secretaries concerned were present.
