Viqarunnisa Noon School and College emerged champion overpowering Scholastica (Uttara) by 11-3 in the exciting girls’ event final of the Polar Ice-cream 24th School Handball Tournament-2017 at the Shaheed Captain M Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium in the capital yesterday.
The winning side led the first half 10-1. Fatema Khatun netted six goals for Viqarunnisa, while Noha struck two goals for Scholastica. Fatema was adjudged the best player of the tournament.
Shaheed Anwar Girls College came from behind to thrash Shaheed Nobi High School by 8-7 goals and placed third in the fairly contested match of the girls’ event.
In boys’ event, Sunnydale clinched the title overwhelming St Gregory’s High School by 19-16 goals in the hard-fought final match at the same venue. The winners were leading 9-7 goals in the first half. Sangram slammed the highest eight goals for Sunnydale. Tahsan, Tanvir and Asif made four goals each for the losing side. Sangram was named the best player of the meet.
State minister for Youth and Sports Dr Biren Sikder as the chief guest distributed the prizes among the winners. Bangladesh Handball Federation (BHF) president AKM Nurul Fazal Bulbul presided over the ceremony, where Shah Masud Imam, CEO of Dhaka Icecream Industries Limited, BHF general secretary Asaduzzaman Koohinoor ‘among others’ were also present.
