Govt mulls to establish nuclear power entre, says Yafesh Osman

Bangladesh is for the first time on the brink of setting up nuclear power centre due to farsighted and time-befitting policy of the present government, said Science and Technology Minister Architect Yafesh Osman yesterday, reports BSS.
Bangladesh is now on the verge of establishing first nuclear power station, said the minister while inaugurating the four-day 39th national representative conference of Regional Co-operative Agreement (RCA) for research, development and training related to nuclear science and
technology for Asia and Pacific, at a hotel in Coxs Bazaar.
The government is giving the topmost priority on nuclear security and safety for implementing the Ruppur Nuclear Power Station, he said.
Yafesh Osman said Bangladesh has achieved tremendous development in the field of agriculture and nuclear medicine due to active cooperation of the IAEA and RCA.
RCA is an intergovernmental agreement between the International Atomic Energy Authority (IAEA) Member States located in South Asia, South East Asia and the Pacific, and the Far East. It was first established in 1972 under the auspices of the IAEA to promote, coordinate and implement cooperative research,
development and training projects in the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology amongst the parties to the RCA.
Currently, there are 21 parties to the RCA, namely: Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Palau, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Viet Nam.
Dr Aleya Begum, member of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC), gave welcome address at the inaugural function while Chairman of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Commission (BAERC) Professor Dr Nayeem Chowdhury, IAEA director for Technical Cooperation for Asia and the Pacific Dr Najat Mokhter and RCA Chairperson Dr Chadrabal Mavagh spoke as the special guests.
A total of 40 representatives from 22 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, Malaysia, Korea, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, across the world were participating in the conference.
