Cabinet committee meeting to discuss 7 proposed power plants

The Power Division is going to propose the setting up of seven power plants with a combined capacity of 787 MW at the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Purchases tomorrow.
The proposed high fuel oil (HFO)-based plants will be established in seven districts.
According to documents available with The Independent, the Power Division plans to set up a 113-MW plant in Rangpur, a 115-MW plant in Thakurgaon, a 113-MW plant in Bogra, a 115-MW plant in Chandpur, a 104-MW in Narayanganj, a 113-MW plant in Noakhali and a 114-MW plant in Feni. All these plants will be implemented by independent power producers (IPPs).
The proposal for the finalised tariffs for the purchase of 60 MW power from Tripura in India will also be placed before the meeting of the Purchases Committee for approval.
According to the documents, the Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) had fixed the final tariff for Tk. 6.31 per kilowatt following a meeting with NVVN Ltd, India on March 16.
The year-on-year escalation will be 5 per cent. On this basis, Bangladesh will have to pay a total of Tk. 1,143.60 crore in the next four years. The agreement will be made for importing electricity up until 2021.
The Power Division will also propose the cancellation of the letter of intent (LOI) for the implementation of a 30-MW solar park on a BOO basis on the banks of the Dhorola in Kurigram.
Meanwhile, the Energy and Mineral Resources Division (EMRD) will seek the Purchases Committees approval for the terminal use agreement (TUA) and implementation agreement (IA) with Summit Corporation Ltd for setting up of a second 500 mmcf LNG terminal at Moheshkhali under the Special Power Act, 2010.
