RAJSHAHI: People of Rajshahi have started getting National Smart Identity cards formally after Dhaka and Chittagong, reports BSS.
Bangladesh Election Commission (BEC) inaugurated the distribution activities through giving cards to 10 important persons in the city yesterday. BEC local office hosted an inaugural function at Shilpakala Academy auditorium on the occasion. Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam and Election Commissioner Kobita Khanom attended and addressed the ceremony as chief and special guests respectively with Deputy Commissioner Kazi Ashraf Uddin in the chair.
Bangladesh Election Commission (BEC) Secretary Muhammad Abdullah, Director General of National Identity Registration Brig Gen Saidul Islam, Divisional Commissioner of Rajshahi division Noor-Ur-Rahman and Regional Election Officer Subhash Chandra Shaha also spoke.
Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam told the meeting that the card distribution among 90 million people across the country will end in phases by December 2017. This smart card has multipurpose uses in availing 25 types of services like TIN number, driving licence, passport, bank accounts opening, marriage registration and admission to educational institutions.
Election Commissioner Kobita Khanom says the smart card will make the identity of Bangladeshi people more meaningful.
In the global context, the card will identify the Bangladeshis as dignified nation also. The card could be used for both social and personal purposes as it has 25 security characteristics, she added.
