Stand against child injustice

Stand against child injustice

While presenting his keynote paper at the inaugural session of the 136th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) assembly at Dhaka, the day before yesterday, the Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi called upon world leaders to become more determined in raising their voices collectively against child marriages, child labour and exploitation.
Satyarthi , who is also the chairperson of the Global March against Child Labour, markedly mentioned that young people have become more pro-active in raising their voices against exploitation, violence, and denial of their rights worldwide. He further stated that some one hundred million young people have seemingly appeared resolute to make the world a better place. Given their power energy and idealism, if we fail to harness their strength and idealism, they will otherwise become frustrated, intolerant and violent. Very much in tuned with his sharp observations, we have seen how young people have recently been misguided and radicalised in some parts of the world, including in Bangladesh.
The point, however, the United Nations declaration grants children certain rights that are not dependent on race, colour or creed. However, our major concern is the injustice that some children are forced to face today — and many sometimes to their peril.
Apart from physical and social abuse, there are many examples of the phenomenon of injustice that children all across the world face today. For instance, child labour is one marked example of injustice faced by children in Bangladesh and many other African and Asian countries. Unfit parents often force their children into jobs in order to provide for themselves and sometimes even their families. This is a problem that parents should put out as much effort as they can to provide for their children’s basic needs so that children do not have to settle for cleaning people’s windscreens, work in sweatshops ,  working for hours in the market selling goods, or begging in the streets. These unsafe practices seem to be increasing in frequent occurrences every day. The need of the hour is to stand united against all unfair practices and injustices shown to our children at home and abroad. Moreover, Referring to Sathyarti’s speech, some USD 22 billion are needed to ensure education for children in primary schools every year. This amount is almost the same as three-and-a-half days of global military expenditure. We draw sincere attention of major powers of the world to address this fact in realising children’s’ right to education. The degree of indiscretion and injustice witnessed globally - there certainly is the reality that enough is not being done to safeguard the present and future of children, hence in various ways children’s rights are greatly compromised. This must end.
