Reaction Over Comilla City Corporation Election Results

Sakku win boosts party morale, says BNP

Sakku win boosts party morale, says BNP

The BNP rank and file have become rejuvenated with the victory of the party-nominated mayoral candidate in the Comilla City Corporation (CCC) polls.  Speaking at different functions in the city yesterday, senior party leaders claimed that the winning margin would have increased considerably if the elections had not been manipulated by Awami League (AL) cadres at different polling centres. They also claimed that the margin would have been 50 per cent higher, had the people been able to cast their votes properly till the closure of polling.
BNP candidate Monirul Haque Sakku has won the Comilla mayoral race with a margin of over 11,000 votes.  “Sakku would have won the CCC polls with a huge margin of votes if activists of the ruling party had not created anarchy in some polling centres to slow down the polling process,” said BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed.  Speaking at a discussion meeting at the Jatiya Press Club, the BNP leader said that the result reflects the resentment of the people against the “AL-led government's misdeeds.”
“It was a protest against the government’s corruption, repression on people, and lack of accountability,” he added.
Addressing another meeting at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU), Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, another standing committee member of the party, alleged that ruling party leaders and activists stuffed ballots by capturing many polling centres. "Many voters were afraid to show their support for us publicly.  They cast  their votes for a sheaf of paddy (the election symbol of the BNP) by wearing badges of boat (the election symbol of the AL),” he claimed.
Roy accused the government of staging drama by killing militants instead of bringing them to justice.  The militant drama has been
staged to sign the much-talked-about defence agreement with India, he claimed. Speaking at another meeting at the DRU, BNP vice-chairman Abdullah Al Noman said the BNP candidate has won the polls by outwitting the AL. He alleged that many polling agents of Sakku were forced to leave the polling booths. “The BNP candidate would have won the poll with a margin of at least 30,000 votes if the elections were held in a free and fair manner,” he added.
