RAB intelligence chief Lt Col Abul Kalam Azad, who was injured during an operation against militants in Sylhet and succumbed to his injuries at CMH, Dhaka early yesterday, died as a splinter of bomb gone into his brain through the eyes, doctors said. Shohel Mahmod, head of the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) forensic department, said: “Abul Kalam Azad died due to a blast and a splinter of a bomb was found in his brain. The splinter entered into his brain through the left eye." With the death of Azad, the toll in the Sylhet anti-militant operation rose to seven. Earlier, six people, including two policemen, were killed and 40 others, including Azad and another official of the intelligence wing, injured in two bomb blasts in front of Gotatikor Madrasah adjacent to Atia Mahal at Shibbari in Dakkhin Surma upazila in Sylhet on the night of March 25 during an Army-led operation on a militant den. Azad, who was taken to Singapore for better treatment on March 26, breathed his last at the CMH around 12:05 am yesterday. Azad was brought back home from Singapore on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal yesterday expressed optimism that all terrorist and militant activities would soon be put under control. He also said that anti-terror operations would be conducted by keeping coordination among all law enforcement agencies. “Whenever any specific force is needed, we’ll call them. Our charismatic forces always conduct operations with extreme caution,” he added.
The minister said this while paying homage to the slain Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) intelligence wing director Lt Col Abul Kalam Azad at the RAB headquarters in the city yesterday. Lt Col Abul Kalam Azad, who was injured during an operation against militants in Sylhet, succumbed to his wounds at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in the city early yesterday. His first namaz-e-janaza was held at Cantonment Central Mosque after Juma prayers and the second one was held at the RAB Headquarters at 3pm. Later he was buried at the Banani military graveyard. Terming the blasts outside the militant den in Sylhet an isolated incident, Kamal claimed that the militants had implemented the bombs secretly.
AKM Shahidul Haque. inspector general of police, said: “We’ll find those who patronise and finance militant activities.” RAB director general Benazir Ahmed said: “Anti-terror operations will continue till the elimination of militants. We’re going through a war like situation, and we’ll not stop until we weed out the militants from our soil.” Yusuf Hasan Himel, younger brother of the slain national hero, said: “My brother left us on the very day when he was supposed to say goodbye to the RAB by joining the Boarder Guards of Bangladesh( BGB).” “My brother was transferred earlier, but he was scheduled to join in BGB on April 1,” he added.
