The medical centre of the Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET) is running with only three physicians. Teachers, students and officials have been expressing their unhappiness over the issue. They say a doctor cannot be found when needed.
Sources said there are three doctors and two nurses for about 5,000 teachers, officials and students of RUET. They treat patients with fever and cold, while others are sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).
The RUET began its journey in 1964 and set up the medical centre in 1977. There are six posts of doctors, but only three doctors are there. They work from Saturday to Thursday (7.00am to 10.00pm) in three shifts weekly. They are chief physician Dr Mokshed Ali, deputy medical officer Dr Farida Yasmeen and senior medical officer Dr M Azizul Islam.
Besides, five employees are there. So, a team of 10—three doctors, two nurses and five other staff—is running the medical centre.
Some alleged that no treatment is provided during off-days.
There is no modern medical equipment and only one ambulance that is not in working condition for the past one year.
Lafia Tasneem and Hasina Rehana, two students of the electrical and electronic engineering department, said the RUET medical centre is for treating minor ailments. For major disease or medical test purposes, they go elsewhere.
When approached, RUET vice-chancellor Prof. Md Rafiqul Islam Beg said the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) has recently approved a separate budget for improving medical services at RUET.
