The Comilla City Corporation, one of the important urban local government bodies, will pass through election tomorrow in order to elect its mayor and councilors as key political parties nominated their respective candidates to win over peoples’ mandate to their side for a five-year term, reports BSS.
Secretary of the Election Commission (EC) Secretariat Mohammad Abdullah said they have taken all out measures to hold the election in a free, fair and credible atmosphere and assured voters to cast their votes peacefully between 8am and 4pm.
Four mayor candidates, 104 councilor contestants for 27general seats and 40 female councilor rivals for nine women reserved seats are contesting in the polls where 207,566 eligible voters are expected to cast their votes amid tight security.
Returning Officer Rakibuddin Mandol said a peaceful atmosphere has been prevailing in the poll area and he has already made sure that all necessary equipment and papers were reached to the polling stations.
The Comilla City Corporation polls campaign was wrapped up on Tuesday midnight after two weeks of hectic publicity and door-to-door contacts by the candidates, who have been contesting, for the first time, under party symbol.
The main electoral battle for the mayoral post is likely to take place between Awami League nominated candidate Anjum Sultana Shima, an ex-councilor, and BNP-backed Monirul Hoque Sakku, the immediate-past mayor.
Apart from the two candidates, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) leader Shirin Akter and Major (Retd) Mamunur Rashid (Independent) are also vying for the city mayor’s post.
As many as 3,714 members from different law enforcing agencies are deployed to hold the polls in a credible manner. Apart from that 36 executive magistrates and nine judicial magistrates will also be watching the elections.
A municipality for over 150 years since 1864, Comilla was upgraded to Comilla City Corporation in July 2011. The maiden polls to the corporation was held in the following year with Monirul was elected as Mayor and Shima a Councilor.
Comilla City Corporation, 97-km off Dhaka and 167-km off Chittagong, is one of the fastest growing cities in the country and located beside the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. Currently its population is 500,000 with an area of 53.04 square km.
