Public lecture by Nobel Laureate Sir Richard held
A special public lecture by Nobel Laureate Sir Richard J Roberts was held at the North South University (NSU) auditorium in the capital yesterday, says a press release.
During this lecture Sir Richards emphasised on how GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organism) are crucial for agricultural growth in developing countries like Bangladesh. He suggested that GMO’s are essential for breeding and developing new crops and also for enhancing disease control in human, animals and agricultural crops.
A number of special personalities took part in this lecture. The event was chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Atiqul Islam. An opening remark was delivered by Pro VC (designated) GU Ahsan. Chairman (BOT) also imparted a few words for the audience. Sir Richard J Roberts was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1993.He was knighted in 2008.He is the person who pioneered the application of computers in genomics. Dr Roberts has published over 300 papers and more than 10 patents.
25 DU students get scholarships
Twenty five students of Development Studies Department of Dhaka University on Tuesday received scholarships in two categories for their outstanding academic results.
Twenty students were awarded 'Governor Scholarship' while five others 'Professor Asaduzzaman Memorial Scholarship', said a press release.
DU Vice-Chancellor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique handed over the scholarships to the students as the chief guest at a programme at Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium in Social Science Building. Prof Dr Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, chairman of Prof Dr M Asaduzzaman Foundation, presided over the meeting while former governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Atiur Rahman, chairman of Development Studies Department Prof Dr Mohammad Abu Yusuf were, among others, present at the programme.
Confce on low age at marriage in Bangladesh
The East West University Centre for Research and Training (EWUCRT) with assistance of University Grants Commission (UGC) and Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) organised a national conference titled ‘Low Age at Marriage in Bangladesh: Myth or Reality’ on Tuesday, says a press release.
Keynote presenters were Dr Peter Kim Streatfield and Dr Abdur Razzaque from International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddrb) along with Associate Prof Kamrul Islam from department of Population Science, University of Dhaka.
The conference was chaired by Chairperson of CRT and Member of East West University Trustee Board, Dr Rafiqul Huda Chaudhury. Researchers, teachers and students from different faculties participated in the conference.
