Dhaka Wasa (Water Supply & Sewerage Authority) is hopeful of using water Buriganga and Sitalakhya waters again and supplying that to city dwellers in 10 years as it is taking steps to improve the water quality of the rivers by checking pollution, reports UNB.
“Buriganga and Sitalakhya waters are highly polluted and untreatable. That's why we've taken steps to bring water from Jamuna and Meghna rivers. But, we hope we’ll be able to use Buriganga and Sitalakhya waters again after restoring the water quality within the next 10 years,” Dhaka Wasa managing director Engr Taqsem A Khan told a seminar on
Tuesday.
Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), the Institute of Water Modelling (IWM) and the Centre for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS), in association with the Ministry of Water Resources, arranged the seminar at BWDB conference room marking the World Water Day.
Taqsem said Dhaka Wasa is preparing a roadmap to mange wastewater while it is going to implement the sewerage management master plan to check water pollution in the capital.
The government has taken an initiative to prepare a master plan to check river pollution in the country, he said, hoping that the plan will be finalised within the next six months.
He said Dhaka Wasa has already identified nine sources of pollution in Dhaka city, but the pollution of the rivers surrounding the capital cannot be checked overnight.
Taqsem said Dhaka Wasa is expected to complete its five sewerage treatment plants by 2025, which will help stop water pollution in the capital and restore the rivers around Dhaka city.
State Minister for Water Resources Md Nazrul Islam, Water Resources senior secretary Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan, Prof Dr Mujibur Rahman of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) and BWDB director general Jahangir Kabir, among others, spoke at the seminar.
