Maldivian medical student ‘commits suicide’ in Rajshahi

A foreign medical student, who was also an international model, has allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in the girls’ hostel at a medical college in Rajshahi.

Police recovered her body yesterday noon from her room of the hostel. The 20-year-old Maldivian girl was identified as Raudha Athif. She was the daughter of Mohammad Athif and Amina Mahsimat. Raudha Athif was a second-year student of MBBS of Rajshahi Islami Bank Medical College and Hospital at Nawdapara in Rajshahi.
Laily Akter, hostel In-charge of the medical college, said Raudha lived in room no 209 of foreign students’ block in girls’ hostel. Akter said Raudha’s body was found hanging with the ceiling in her room.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Commissioner Shafiqul Islam and senior officers of metropolitan police visited the spot.   The body was sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Two years ago while experimenting with her pictures on social media she became a sensation in the country as the ‘Maldivian Girl With Aqua Blue Eyes’. The pictures also earned her a spot on the cover of Vogue India along with five other women from South Asia. Titled ‘Celebrating Unity In Diversity’ on their ninth anniversary issue.Along with Raudha, Indian model Pooja Mor, Nepalese model Varsha Thapa, Sri Lankan model Shenelle Rodrigo, Bangladeshi model Jannatul Ferdous Peya, and Bhutanese model Deki Dorji Wangmo featured the cover.
Talking to The Independent,  Jannatul Ferdous Peya, the Bangladeshi model who worked with Raudha, said: “I'm shocked and speechless. I worked with her in the Vogue magazine. I don’t know why she committed suicide."
