Heavy rain washed out the second one-day international of a three-match series between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Dambulla yesterday, reports AFP. Bangladesh could not start their innings due to rain after bowling out Sri Lanka for 311 runs in 49.5 overs, thanks to a hat-trick of fast bowler Taskin Ahmed, who finished with 4-47. The wash-out means Bangladesh now cannot lose the series after winning the first match by 90 runs on Saturday.
Needing a win to stay alive in the tournament, Kusal Mendis laid the foundation for a strong total for Sri Lanka with 102 off 107 balls before Taskin's late burst halted their progress at the Rangiri International Stadium.
Taskin took a catch off his own bowling to dismiss Mendis. Then he removed Asela Gunuratne (39), Suranga Lakmal and Nuwan Pradeep in the final over to complete his hat-trick, becoming the fifth Bangladeshi bowler to achieve the feat. Mashrafe Mortaza took opener Danushka Gunathilaka early for nine but Mendis shared 111 runs with skipper Upul Tharanga for the second wicket to put Sri Lanka in a strong position.
A direct hit from Mahmudullah helped Bangladesh separate the duo as Tharanga was run out for 65, trying to complete a single of a no-ball off Mustafizur Rahman.
Mendis struck a six and a four in the next two balls to complete his fifty before racing to his century in 102 balls with a single off Mortaza. He also shared 83 runs for the third wicket with Dinesh Chandimal, who chipped in with 24 runs. Milinda Siriwardana also made a useful contribution with 30 runs.
Sri Lanka made three changes to their squad, bringing in Nuwan Kulasekara, Nuwan Pradeep and Dilruwan Perera for Sachith Pathirana, Lahiru Kumara and Lakshan Sandakan. The third and final match of the series will be held in Colombo on April 1. Earlier, fast bowler Taskin Ahmed became the fifth Bangladeshi bowler to claim an ODI hat trick as he helped Bangladesh restrict Sri Lanka to 311 in the second ODI match against Sri Lanka in Dambulla yesterday The hat trick came in the last over of the Sri Lanka innings. He took Asela Gunaratne who holed out one to mid-off against fuller delivery before dismissed Suranga Lakmal with a full-toss delivery. Thereafter he completed his hat trick with a pin-point Yorker that uprooted the wicket of Nuwan Pradip. By doing so, Taskin etched his name to the folklore of Bangladeshi cricket history alongside Shahadat Hossain Rajib, Abdur Razzak, Rubel Hossain and Taijul Islam.
Shahadat was the first Bangladeshi bowler to claim an ODI hat trick against Zimbabwe in 2006 at Harare.
Razzak’s hat trick also came against Zimbabwe in 2010 in Dhaka while Rubel Hossain achieved the feat against New Zealand in Dhaka in 2013. Left arm spinner Taijul however was the first bowler in history to claim ODI hat trick on debut match. His hat trick also came against Zimbabwe in Dhaka in 2014. Taskin’s hat trick is overall the 41st instance of hat trick in ODI cricket with 36 different bowlers taking the honours. Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga achieved the feat thrice while Wasim Akram, Saqlain Mushtaq and Chamdina Vass made it twice in their career.
