Finance minister AMA Muhith has reiterated the need to recover the money stolen from the reserves of the Bangladesh Bank (BB).
“We definitely have to get back from the Philippines the money stolen from the Bangladesh Bank as that money is our own,” he said yesterday after the meeting with the bank officials at the conference room of the finance ministry.
In February 2016, hackers stole USD 81m from the BB’s account with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. “No one can hold our bank’s reserve money for long,” he said.
Law minister Anisul Huq, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the finance ministry Dr Abdur Razzak, central bank governor Fazle Kabir and attorney-general Mahbubey Alam were present at the meeting.
Speaking on the fire at the Bangladesh Bank building last Thursday, Muhith said it occurred due to an electric short-circuit.
Five transactions worth USD 101 million made by hackers, and withdrawn from the account, were successful. USD 20 million were later traced to Sri Lanka and USD 81 million to the Philippines.
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York blocked the remaining 30 transactions, amounting to USD 850 million, following the BB’s request.
