A mobile court of the Chittagong district administration has disconnected the gas, electricity and water lines of 18 families and directed about 100 families to leave their homes to avert possible loss of lives from landslides.
The court, led by assistant commissioner of land (Sadar) Achhia Khatun, was conducting a drive in the city’s Motijarna area from 11am to 2pm yesterday. Habibul Hasan and Mahmudullah Maruf, executive magistrates of the Chittagong district administration, were also present.
Representatives from the Bangladesh Power Development Board, police and Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Limited took active part during the drive. Landslides in monsoon claim scores of lives every year in Chittagong. The most affected are those who live in the slopes of 11 hills in the area that are prone to landslides. “We request people living in hilly slopes to take shelter in safe places ahead of the rainy season. As part of our campaign, we've disconnected the utility lines 18 families and told 100 more to settle elsewhere,” said Achhia Khatun.
“Many people lose their lives because of landslide every year in Chittagong. This year, we've started to campaign prior to the rainy season. We're warning those living in the slopes of Motijorna and Battali Hills to avoid unexpected landslides. We're telling them to take shelter in a safe place as many have already died here,” she added. Landslides triggered by heavy rains in and around Chittagong city have claimed over 262 lives between 1999 and 2016. The death toll includes the 127 who lost their lives in a single catastrophic landslide in 2007. The disasters took place in Lalkhan Bazar, Motijharna, Tankir Pahar, Batali Hill, Akber Shah and Pahartali areas. Despite frequent warnings issued by the government, poor people still live on the hilly slopes of the area as politically influential people rent out slums in those areas to them .
