HC rejects bail petition of alleged IS member

The High Court yesterday rejected a bail petition filed by Samiun Rahman alias Ibn Hamdan, an alleged Islamic State (IS) member, in connection with a conspiracy to establish an IS group in Bangladesh.
It is suspected that Hamdan, a UK citizen of Bangladeshi origin, had been sent to Bangladesh to recruit jihadists for the IS.
A vacation bench of the HC, comprising Justice Farid Ahmed and Justice Mohammad Ullah, passed the order, considering that the petition was not submitted properly before the court. During the hearing, additional attorney general Murad Reza told the court that Hamdan cannot get bail since there are some serious allegations against him.
It may be mentioned that Hamdan was detained on September 28, 2014, from the capital's Kamalapur Railway Station for a case filed on Anti-terrorism Act. Police filed a charge-sheet against him on April 7.
Advocate Syed Al Asafur Ali appeared for Hamdan during the hearing.
