A total of 1,06,511 students have not taken admissions to higher secondary level in any college even after the publication of the final merit list, said Nurul Islam Nahid, Education Minister, hereon Thursday.
He informed that a total of 12,82,618 students, who appeared in the class 10 board exams, passed the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination this year. Out of those who cleared the boards, 1,06,511 students have not yet taken admissions in any college across the country.
This information was given at a press briefing held at the secretariat following the publication of the final merit list of those seeking admissions to higher secondary level studies.
According to the final merit list that was published on Thursday, a total of 82,544 applicants were listed for admission to higher secondary courses.
Replying to a query, the minister said, “All students do not take admission for different reasons. There is no country where hundred percent students take admission to higher education.”
Earlier, from the three merit lists that have been published till now, a total of 10,93,563 students have taken admissions after applying online or using mobile-based SMS facility so far. If all the students from the final merit list take admission, the total number would be 11,76,107.
The education ministry, however, has decided that those students, who have missed the cut or did not take admission, will be eligible for admissions to any of the colleges directly, depending on the availability of seats.
“Still we have enough vacant seats in the colleges. More than two lakh seats will remain vacant,” assured Nahid.
The minister said the colleges will be directed to admit students who have refrained from admissions till now.
These students need not apply online for admissions.
“Students, who have not taken admissions yet, can do so till July 31 depending on the availability of vacant seats. No college will raise any objection in this regard. It is our directive, and the education boards will not obstruct it,” added the minister.
Replying to another query, the minister said, “The students can communicate with the education boards regarding the availability of seats. There are 14 colleges under the Dhaka Education Board that did not get any students.”
According to the Dhaka Education Board sources, a total of 148 colleges, including 14 under the Dhaka Education Board, have not got any student this year for HSC admission.
Asked about if there is any chance of monetary transactions taking place during open admissions, he said, “Any such incident has not occurred yet. The colleges that have vacant seats need students for their own survival. However, we are vigilant in this regard.”
Besides, students who want to migrate will be able to do so according to the existing rules of migration. Applicants on the final list can apply for admissions on July 25 & 26, without payment of late fee. The minister also said there are 20,500 seats available in colleges under the Technical Education Board, for which admissions will in August.
The Education Ministry has carried out online and SMS-based admission system in four phases. The results of the fourth merit list were published on http://www.xiclassadmission.gov.bd.
Among those present at the briefing included, Additional Secretary, AS Mahmud; Director General of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Scondary Education, Prof. Fahima Khatun; Chairman of Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka, Prof. Abu Bakkar Siddique.
This is the first time that the Education Ministry tried online admissions to higher secondary level, but the system faced various technical issues since the publication of the first merit list.
