Modern tech in promoting shrimp industry stressed

A day-long ‘consulting workshop for developing national shrimp strategy’ was held at the conference room of BFFEA at Shrimp Tower under Sadar police station in the city yesterday. Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association (BFFEA) and a non government organisation Solidaridad, Network Asia, jointly organised the workshop in collaboration with Kingdom of the Netherlands. Solidaridad, with support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands, is implementing the ‘Sustainable Agriculture, Food Security and Linkages (SaFal) project’ to enhance food and nutrition security of small farmers and landless workers of southwest region of the country with a focus on developing resilient livelihoods through promoting sustainable agricultural production and market chain development in the southwest region of the country.
Deputy Director of Department of Fisheries (DoF), Khulna division Md Moniruzzaman was the chief guest while International Programme Coordinator Aquaculture of Solidaridad Daniel Knoop, deputy director (quality control) of Department of Fisheries, Khulna Md Abdur Rashed, vice-president of BFFEA Sheikh Md Abdul Baki, director of BFFEA Shayamol Das and Md Anisur Rahman of Responsible Shrimp Farmers Association were the special guests. Speakers said shrimp industry has a substantial contribution to the revenue income of the country. But the demand for processed frozen shrimp is showing a declining trend due to failure in its planned cultivation maintaining hygienic standard. They emphasised on awareness among the people involved in shrimp cultivation to keep reputation of the industry. They also stressed the need for use of modern technology in protection of quality and marketing of frozen shrimp.
