Twenty-one leaders and activists of the Babuganj upazila units of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its front organisations were sent to jail on Wednesday evening after court rejected their bail prayers. Defense lawyer Advocate Ruhul Amin Khan said four cases (GR- 4, 5, 7, and 31 of 2015) were lodged with Barisal Airport police station against BNP leaders and activists of Babuganj upazila in January 2015. The BNP leaders and activists were accused of committing different types of political violence including ransacking and torching vehicles, disrupting road communication, attacking police, creating obstructions to law enforcers while performing public duty. To face the trial, 21 leaders and activists including Israt Hasan Kochi, Babuganj upazila BNP president, Jahangir Hossain Molla, Shawkat Khan, vice-president and organising secretary of upazila Jubo Dal, Arifur Rahman Shimul, Babuganj College JCD president, and Mustafizur Rahman Tulu and Jubayer, JCD activists, on Wednesday surrendering before the court appealed for bail. However, Rafikul Islam, metropolitan magistrate, on Wednesday afternoon rejecting their bail prayers ordered to send all of the 21 accused to jail.
