The Independent steps into 23rd year

For the first time, an English language daily brought out a weekend magazine, a youth tabloid and a medical supplement

With the dawn today, The Independent steps into its 23rd year. Certainly 22 years of time are not a very long period for a newspaper. But a newspaper—and an English one at that in Bangladesh perspective—to not only survive but also flourish over these years is by any definition a significant achievement. There are reasons for us to take pride in the fact that for over two decades we have been able to retain the trust and confidence of our readers. We reiterate that this newspaper, true to its name, has been independent in its commitment to presentation of news and analysis.
This is one newspaper, the readers will agree, where truth and journalistic ethics are considered as inviolable. The launching of The Independent in 1995 was quite a momentous event as the neat looking daily instantly caught the attention of all and sundry. This newspaper has been a trendsetter in the English language print media in various ways. For the first time, an English language daily brought out a weekend magazine, a youth tabloid and a medical supplement.
These were things that attracted the readers. Above, all, the newspaper always followed a sensible and balanced line, carefully avoiding sensationalism. Over the years, it has maintained its core values and at the same time adapted itself perfectly with the changing trends in the media. It is a newspaper whose management and the senior journalists have always encouraged the implementation of innovative ideas.
Moreover, the newspaper never acted under the influence of vested interests. It has always taken the path of constructive journalism. Cheap shots and saucy stories have never been part of The Independent’s repertoire. It is a fact that people want more news and information today than ever before. They also want it in different ways — in print, on the air or on the Web. As long as news providers give it to them when they want it, where they want it and how they want it, they not only will survive but also thrive. That has always been the print media’s main strength and The Independent looks towards the future with hope and a positive attitude.
On this occasion we extend our sincere gratitude to our vendors, printers, advertisers and readers and urge them to support our development and growth in the years to come.
