With the dawn today, The Independent steps into its 23rd year. Certainly 22 years of time are not a very long period for a newspaper. But a newspaper—and an English one at that in Bangladesh perspective—to not only survive but also flourish over these years is by any definition a significant achievement. There are reasons for us to take pride in the fact that for over two decades we have been able to retain the trust and confidence of our readers. We reiterate that this newspaper, true to its name, has been independent in its commitment to presentation of news and analysis. 
This is one newspaper, the readers will agree, where truth and journalistic ethics are considered as inviolable. The launching of The Independent in 1995 was quite a momentous event as the neat looking daily instantly caught the attention of all and sundry. This newspaper has been a trendsetter in the English language print media in various ways.
