‘Create consensus on Genocide Day’

BSS

RAJSHAHI: Speakers at a discussion here yesterday stressed the need for creating consensus among people at home and abroad to earn international recognition of the Genocide Day, reports BSS.
Like the Liberation War, the incident of genocide is marked permanently in the history of Bangladesh and the young generation needs to work for a due recognition of the day, they added.
District administration organised the discussion at Shilpakala Academy auditorium to mark the Genocide Day, which was observed here for the first time like other parts of the country.
From now on, Bangladesh will observe March 25 as Genocide Day, the day when the Pakistan army unleashed its war machine against the population of the then East Pakistan.
Commissioner of Rajshahi Division Noor-Ur-Rahman addressed the discussion as chief guest with Deputy Commissioner Kazi Ashraf Uddin in the chair.
DIG of Police of Rajshahi Range Khurshid Hossain, Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Shafiqul Islam, Superintendent of Police Moazzem Hossain Bhuiyan, district unit commander of Freedom Fighters Council Farhad Hossain Mian and City unit commander Dr Abdul Mannnan also spoke.
Commissioner Noor-Ur-Rahman said earning national recognition of the day is quite important as "it will help young generation to know what actually happened on this day in 1971”.
He said the country suffered worst atrocities committed by the Pakistan army -- from the beginning to the end of the Liberation War. He added that the government is conducting trial of war criminals to make sure that the ones involved in the genocide do not go unpunished.
“We have to take a move to raise the issue at the international organistions with evidence so that the day can be observed globally,” the chief guest added. The discussion was followed by a cultural and film show on genocide and liberation war.
