The government has expressed concern over India's decision to set up 400 to 500 mobile towers near the border. Dhaka will convey to New Delhi that placement of towers near the border will increase smuggling and human trafficking, and put border security at risk.
According to sources, a delegation, led by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) chairman Sunil Kanti Bose, will go to India in August to discuss the issue.
BTRC secretary general Sarwar Alam told The Independent that the commission at a joint meeting has decided not to allow any mobile tower to be placed within three km of the border to stop cross-border smuggling and human trafficking, and to ensure border security.
According to reports received by Dhaka, India's state telecom company, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), has received permission from the Indian home ministry to install mobile towers near the border.
It will set up 400 to 500 towers in the northeast area of India, which will actually be placed near the border. The work will start in Assam.
Last week, the Indian government had announced that it would provide telecom services to those living in the border areas and to border security officials.
