Speakers at the inaugural ceremony of a fair have stressed for massive tree plantation everywhere to ensure a safer planet, maintaining ecology and biodiversity to minimize the climate change impacts, reports BSS from Rangpur. They were addressing a launching ceremony of the 10-day ‘Wood, Fruit and Medicinal Tree Fair -2015’ Wednesday jointly organised by the district administration, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and Social Forestry Division on the Town Club ground in Nilphamari district town.
Earlier, a colourful rally, participated by officials and employees of the administration, DAE, Department of Forest (DoF), agriculture-related organisations, NGOs, nursery owners, students, farmers and elite, was brought out in the streets.
Deputy Commissioner of Nilphamari Md. Zakir Hossain formally inaugurated the fair and addressed the function as the chief guest with Additional Deputy Commissioner Md. Liyakat Ali in the chair.
Deputy Director (Local Government) for Nilphamari Gullal Singh, Nilphamari pourashava Mayor Dewan Kamal Ahmed, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sabet Ali, Deputy Director of the DAE Golam Mohammad Idris and Regional Assistant Forest Conservator Dr Prantosh Roy addressed as the special guests.
About 100 stalls have been set up in the fair by different organizations, nursery owners and entrepreneurs displaying saplings of over 150 varieties of 60 indigenous plants of fruit, timber and medicinal ones.
The speakers said natural disasters like super cyclones, tsunamis, Sidr, earth quakes, bushfires and droughts are occurring due to the negative impacts of climate change. Thus, threatening the habitats, environment overall ecology system. They said massive tree plantation can protect the environment, ecology and biodiversity to retard the desertification process and save innumerable living species, including animals, birds, insects and aquatic animals like fishes from extinction.
The chief guest called for planting more fruit, timber and medicinal plants to maintain ecological balance of the environment.
He also suggested for innovating high yielding and hybrid varieties of fruits to increase production round the year to meet nutritional demand of the people and assist the rural people in achieving self-reliance.
