‘Militants alter gameplans for attacks’

Expand dens across country
HABIBULLAH MIZAN

Ahead of massive anti-militant crackdowns by law enforcement agencies, militants are planning to relocate to different remote areas of the country, said sources. They are also planning to carry out suicide attacks from their new dens, they added. Militants continue to pursue their activities by being divided into small groups to dodge the vigilant eyes of law enforcers. As part of their new strategy, they are recruiting naive and religious women in their teams.
Humayun Kabir, deputy inspector general (DIG) of Bangladesh Police, recently said that they have formed a counter terrorism unit in each district to combat militants. He admitted that it is likely that militants would try to indoctrinate Rohingya refugees. When asked whether militants are recruiting women, especially female readymade garments (RMG) workers, on a massive scale, Humayun Kabir said all law enforcement agencies have been put on alert to resist such devious plans.
Shahely Ferdous, assistant inspector-general (AIG) of the police headquarters, yesterday said: “We take the same counter-motivation for women to refrain them from taking up the cause of militancy in the same way we discourage men. But our all efforts go in vain when women decide to join militants and want to die as martyrs. We can’t motivate them to leave the path of militancy when they have do not have the fear of death.”
Militants usually target large numbers of uneducated RMG workers as potential recruits. They also concentrate on the hills to brainwash local youths with a low literacy level. Rohingya refugees are also on their list.
It has been learnt that militant leaders are frequently visiting some Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar to recruit the refugees as suicide attackers. Some of the women there are being indoctrinated.
According to the counter-terrorism experts, militant leaders prefer recruiting women because they often use their own children as human shields. Intelligence sources say that militants have been conducting their activities in remote parts of Chittagong, Chittagong Hill Tracts, Sylhet and Noakhali. Small groups of militants are active in hilly areas of Uttar Rangunia, Kodal Street, Kaptai, Hosepur, Jamarghat and Fatikchori of Chittagong district. They are also working in hilly areas of Ramu, Ukhiya and Naikhachori of Bandarban district.
Militants have set up their dens at Lalmai Pahar of Comilla and Ramgarh upazila of Khagrachari. In these places, Rohingya refugees are in touch with militant leaders.
Militants are also strengthening their ranks in Hatiya upazila, a remote area of Noakhali district.
As law enforcement agencies have maintained strict surveillance in the capital, militant leaders are trying to recruit new members from the ranks of female RMG workers in Ashulia and Savar. As most of these workers are very poor and religious, the militant leaders are trying to recruit them easily by misinterpreting the tenets of Islam.
On receiving intelligence, law enforcement agencies are updating the list of militant dens by tracking their activities with sophisticated technology. They have also intensified their surveillance and taken additional security measures at different key installations of the country.
