Police’s role in curbing crimes

It is worrying to note that the police show unwillingness to register case in connection with sexual crime. According to a report in this newspaper on Wednesday, a teacher of the Sunrise International School at Sadhollapur village in the Birulia Union Parishad area of Savar was having sexual relations with a female colleague of his since 2015 till last week promising to marry her. As the teacher was trying to marry another girl, the female colleague felt she was victimized.
Finding no other alternative she went to the Savar Model Police Station and submitted a written complaint against the teacher on Tuesday. But as of 7 pm that day, the police did not register a case. Instead, they urged the victim to reach a compromise with the accused, alleged family members of the victim.
However, if the members of the law enforcing agency do not become serious about certain things where will the people go? There are instances of police taking the side of influential persons in exchange for monetary benefits. Police along with the members of other law enforcement agencies are striving to control crimes.
When the lives and properties of the people are in jeopardy, a bit of cooperation from the members of the police can come as a great relief for the victims. As a matter of fact, police can help curbing crimes substantially if they so desire. The presence of a policeman can bring solace for a person, but it can also be intimidating. Only it depends on how the former behaves.
Mutual trust and confidence are needed in this regard. There is a traditional notion that police can never be friends of people. This notion has gained currency due to the incidents of harassment and torture perpetrated on innocent people by a section of corrupt policemen. Police authorities should take it into account and do the needful. Police will earn the confidence of people if a proper environment of mutual respect and trust is created.
Police should go ahead with the policy of ‘punishing the evil and rearing the good’ for the establishment of the rule of law and good governance.  People will also have to abide by the laws of the land and cooperate with police in the greater interest of the state. The government has a due role to play in bridging the wide gap between the police and the taxpayers.
