The BNP has expressed apprehension that Bangladesh’s geographical independence would be threatened if a defence agreement is signed with India. “People will not accept any agreement against the country’s independence and sovereignty during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Speaking at a joint meeting of the party at the Bhasani Auditorium yesterday (Thursday), Fakhrul said the issues being discussed regarding the Prime Minister’s visit have created concern among the people. He expressed concern over
the issues being published in newspapers on her (PM) visit on April 7–9, saying that nothing has been disclosed formally as to what agreements will be signed. He said the BNP, along with the nation, would not compromise on the sovereignty of the country.
He said the Premier needs to visit New Delhi to resolve outstanding issues with India.
Giving importance to Teesta water sharing, the BNP leader questioned the necessity of other agreements if the Teesta agreement is not signed. He accused the government of cornering the BNP by using militants politically.
He said all political parties and people of different views should be united to resist militancy.
“A situation has been created as if nobody can talk about militancy. There is an evil effort to shift the responsibility to the BNP if any militant activity takes place,” he added.
The meeting decided to bring out a colourful procession from the front of the party's central office at Naya Paltan at 2pm on March 26 to mark Independence Day. The BNP leader called upon party leaders and activists to make the programme a success.
Presided over by Mirza Abbas, the meeting was also addressed by Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Awal Mintoo, Abdus Salam and others.
