Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) yesterday observed the World Meteorological Day in a befitting manner through different events, reports BSS. Acting Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Janab Akhter Hussain Bhuiya inaugurated the Meteorological Day inaugurated the celebration function as chief guest at BMD Headquarters in the city's Agargaon area, said an ISPR press release.
The daylong programmes included an exhibition of meteorological instruments, screening a documentary film on related issues at the headquarters for the public and a technical session conducted by the BMD Officers' Association.
Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television broadcast special discussion programmes separately putting importance on significance of the day, the release said.
Moreover, the operational units and radar stations of Dhaka, Cox's Bazar, Khepupara, Rangpur and Moulvibazar remained open for the public.
The release also said the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and its 191 member states and territories, including Bangladesh, observed the day commemorating the emergence of WMO as a specialized agency of the United Nations.
This year the day was observed putting emphasis particularly on the theme 'Understanding Clouds' selected by the WMO, it added.
The release said clouds play a vital role in the climate activities and water cycle. By understanding the clouds properly, it would be possible to provide accurate weather forecast.
