Police have so far seized 152 unregistered motorbikes in Jhenidah.
Traffic Inspector (TI) of Jhenidah Salauddin Ahmed said police launched a drive against hundreds of motorcycles running without any licence and payment of tax defying rules and regulations.
Illegal practice has been creating serious threat to public safety and causing large amount of revenue losses to the government. Criminals prefer using such unregistered vehicles to commit crimes in the district, he added.
Sources at the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) office in Jhenidah said there are about 23,000 registered motorbikes in Jhenidah.
According to assistant circle of Jhenidah BRTA Sheikh Selim Box, they find it hard to take action against unregistered vehicle owners due to their political link.
According to police, six to seven out of every 10 motorcycles are found not registered.
