Health dangers from mobile phone towers

The large number of towers on rooftops in densely populated areas may surely have an impact on the health of people living nearby

It is quite worrying to note that the excessive radiation emitted by towers of mobile phone operators is causing health hazards. According to a report in this newspaper yesterday, this was stated in a report prepared by a committee of experts set up by the health ministry. The report was submitted to the High Court (HC) on Wednesday. The report urged the HC to direct the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to examine the base transceiver stations (BTSs) of mobile operators so that the radiation emitted from the towers can be reduced and kept under control in accordance with WHO guidelines.
Technology has made life easier and comfortable in recent times. Through its magic spell it has brought distance to the doorsteps of people. But all is not going well with it; it has its negative aspect as well. Scores of people are dying in the country in recent times due to lightning in the recent past. Besides, production of fruits in trees has decreased. All these are due to the adverse impact of mobile phone towers, according to experts. Because of the rapid rise in the number of cell phones in the country, the number of BTS towers too has increased over the years. The large number of towers on rooftops in densely populated areas may surely have an impact on the health of people living nearby.  In October 2012, the HC directed the government to examine the level of radiation from mobile phone towers and its impact on health and environment, and submit two separate reports to it. In response to a writ petition, the court asked the chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) to examine the level of radiation after visiting some towers of mobile phone operators and submit a report to it in four weeks.
Since mobile phone is an essential thing in everyday life we cannot do without it. It is equally true that it invites health hazards. But on the plea of health hazards we cannot refrain from using it. What can be done is to minimize its adverse impacts on health.
The BTRC can regularly monitor the level of radiation from the BTS across the country. The ministry concerned and the BTRC can formulate rules or guidelines for setting up BTSs. The persons or organizations violating the guidelines should be brought under discipline.
Generation of awareness is also needed regarding the negative impact of mobile phone towers.
