We condemn terrorist attack in London

We condemn terrorist attack in London

After a long pause of 12 years since the 7/7 transit bombings of 2005, London was once again targeted for a terror strike. A reportedly sick and a depraved man with possible links with the Islamic State has been mentioned to carry out the attack killing four people while injuring some 40 more near the British parliament, the very heart of that country. The suspect, dressed all in black, drove a car at 50mph the full length of Westminster Bridge, aiming deliberately at pedestrians and cyclists. Coupled with innocent pedestrians the nearby police officers were also hit and injured as one of them succumbed to his injuries. Besides the rest of the world, we too, highly condemn such heinous and dastardly terror attack on innocent civilians.
Last Wednesday was perhaps the day the British police had always planned for but hoped would never come. Sadly it has. The country has launched a counter-terror probe in the wake of the attack. However, despite four killings and multiple injuries, the country’s security services acted in an exemplary fashion. The ring of steel protecting Parliament did its job, and the attacker was stopped just inside the gate to the grounds, though not before he stabbed and killed a police guard. Given the sudden nature of the attack, it's rather difficult to forecast what else could have been done, though that does not preclude an analysis of the incident.
Nevertheless, we have seen in the recent past how a series of European cities were warily selected by extremists for carrying out premeditated terror strikes. And also With the Islamic State fighting a losing war, the possibility for terror strikes in any city around the world has increased over the past year.
Drawing lessons from the incident we expect all countries including Bangladesh to be on high-alert as well. In fact, its Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the same day of the attack called terrorism as a global problem. Taking her assessment of the problem with much seriousness Bangladesh law enforcers and counter-terror units should be appropriately armed to fight the ills of global terrorism.
We must jointly address terror occurrences with other countries. The government, in this regard, has so far inked a number of collaborative approaches.
Last but not least, we express our solidarity with the government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain. We equally share the grief of the family members of the dead and injured of last Wednesday’s contemptible attacks.
