Police pressure on rape victim alleged for compromise
The police allegedly violated the Women Children Repression Prevention Act 2000 by not registering a case in connection with a rape in Savar yesterday. According to local sources, Aminul Islam Baten, a teacher of the Sunrise International School at Sadhollapur village in the Birulia Union Parishad area of Savar, had been raping a female colleague of his since 2015 till last week.
He had promised to marry her.
However, Baten was trying to marry another girl. The victim complained to the guardians of the rapist as well as to her family members and relatives.
Some local people tried to mediate and solve the matter. But as the accused is influential, he and his family members began threatening the family of the school teacher.
The victim went to Savar Model Police Station and submitted a written complaint against the rapist yesterday. But the police had not registered a case till filing of this report at around 7pm. Instead, they were putting pressure on the victim to reach a compromise with the accused, alleged family members of the victim.
Sub-inspector (SI) Tariqul Islam of Savar Model Police Station said the victim came to them and submitted a written complaint.
Inspector SM Kamruzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station, denied that pressure was being put on the victim and her family. We are investigating the matter and steps would be taken, he said.
About sending the rape victim to the One Stop Crisis Center (OCC) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for medical tests, Kamaruzzaman said: If required, we will send her to the DMCH.
According to the Prevention of Oppression Against Women and Children Act 2000, whoever commits a rape with a woman or a child, shall be punished with rigorous imprisonment for life and with fine.
Medical tests of a woman or a child being raped shall be carried out no sooner than the rape is committed.
