Gaibandha-1 by-election today

STAFF REPORTER

The Election Commission (EC) has completed all preparations to hold the Gaibandha-1 by-poll today (Wednesday) in a free, fair and neutral way. EC sources said materials needed for holding the election had been sent to polling centres. Election officials and law enforcers are also there.
Polling will begin at 8am and continue till 4pm without any break. A general holiday has been declared in the election areas.
A total of 3,33,426 voters will cast their ballots at 637 booths of 109 polling centres. Of the voters, 1,62,585 are male and 1,70,841 female.
Seven candidates are in the fray. They are, the Awami League's Golam Mostafa Ahmed with the "boat" symbol, Jatiya Party's Shamim Hayder Patwari (plough), Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal's Mohammad Ali Pramanik (flaming torch), Jatiya Party (Monju)'s Waheduzzaman (by-cycle), National People's Party's Zia Zaman Khan (mango), Gonofront's Sariful Islam (fish) and independent candidate Mostafa Mohsin (apple).
The EC said it has made foolproof security arrangements to hold the poll without any trouble and in a festive environment. A large number of law enforcers has been deployed. A total of 22 law enforcers, including eight policemen, will be at general polling centres, while 24 law enforcers, including 10
policemen, will be at important centres.
Three teams, comprising the police, Armed Police Battalion (APBN) and Battalion Ansar, will be posted at each union and five mobile teams will be there in each municipality area to maintain law and order. There will be a total of 50 mobile teams and 17 striking force units at different strategic points to avert any untoward incident.
The EC has also deployed 17 teams of the RAB and seven platoons of the BGB. The law enforcers will remain in the field for four days, starting two days before the election. Besides, 19 executive magistrates have been deployed for four days to hold trial of any crimes related to the polling. There are also four judicial magistrates for any trial for violating electoral rules.
The EC said it has instructed people who are not local residents to leave the election area, as it is illegal for non-residents to try and influence the polls. The constituency fell vacant as its lawmaker, Monjurul Islam Liton, was killed at his house on the 31 December 2016. There is an upazila, a municipality and 15 unions in the Gaibandha-1 constituency.
