Bangladesh sensed yet another chance to take the stranglehold over South Africa in the first Test when Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das batted with utmost composure but at the end they couldn’t materialised it.
Shakib played a rash shot to throw away his wicket as he was approaching towards his first Test fifty against South Africa. His dismissal was the vital point of the Day-3 and gave the Proteas to turn the things from the despair.
He played an uncharacteristic knock, with which he was not used to but it came as  good in team’s cause as the South African bowlers were bowling well in a surface, not so good for batting, according to the batsmen. Shakib 47 came of 114 deliveries with the help of just four boundaries. The ace all-rounder was the part of 82-run partnership with Litton Das, playing only his second Test. As they scored every runs, South Africa looked impatient and frustrated. They tried all the things but hardly could bother the duo before the suicidal shot Shakib played to squander the chance of dominating South Africa.
As off-spinner Simon Harmer delivered one on flat and quick, Shakib aimed for a pull but skied it to get a top-edge. Duminy stationed in short mid-wicket comfortably grabbed the catch to end Shakib’s knock what could have been special one.
The shot is particularly criticised because the same shot in the second ball of the same over almost caused his wicket. Duminy then was standing in mid-on and couldn’t complete the catch despite running from there.
Sensing Shakib’s hurriedness, Duminy was brought up in short mid-wicket. The next three balls of Harmer was dot and Shakib suddenly became impatient. However the last ball of the over was the same flat and quick with slight flight and Shakib went for the same shot again. Duminy then got another chance of taking the due and he didn’t mistake.
“It was a part of plan,” revealed Harmer about the wicket of Shakib.
“I think he was looking to get to his 50 and without a cow corner there he was looking for anything shot and going to the backfoot and I don’t think that ball was short enough. And it skid on a little bit and rushed him. He had done that once before in the over and luckily it landed safe, the second time I am lucky.”
Captain Mushfiqur Rahim however also would have to share the criticism alongside Shakib, specially the way he got out. He though was given not out, Hashim Amla was so sure about his dismissal that he went for video review. It went for them and Mushfiqur had to depart.
He was the Bangladesh’s best and consistent batsman before his finger injury. The captain however had to struggle after returning to the side, recovering from the injury but this was his best chance to amend. He even didn’t keep wicket in a fear of aggravating the injury.
He played with confidence and things seemed to be going in right direction until he failed to deal with the sheer pace of Dale Steyn. The ball hit his thigh pad as he was not flexible enough to move his feet. Resuming the day on 16, he added just 12 to be out on 28. His dismissal came in the fifth over of the day to give South Africa a ray of hope to bounce back in the contention.
