The minister for civil aviation and tourism, Rashed Khan Menon, has sought assistance in terms of technical, strategic and managerial skills from representatives of Franc-ophonie community members to improve tourism products.
“Tourism is a growing sector in Bangladesh and we have so many tourism products such as, historic and recreational sites, accommodation, tours and transportation facilities.
But we cannot export these due to lack of technical skills”, the minister said while attending as chief guest a discussion on tourism at the city's Rose Garden Palace on Monday.
Rashed Khan also said: “Tourism is still in its early stages in Bangladesh, and we would like to work and get technical assistance from leading tourism countries like Canada and France”
He also talked about the Rose Garden Palace: “This house is part of our history and culture and it became the birthplace of the Awami League in 1949 under the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman”
The Canadian high commissioner to Bangladesh, Benoit-Pierre Laramee, was present at the event. He said tourism is a USD 90 billion industry worldwide and generates 1.6 million jobs every year.
Canada is very keen to provide technical support in areas such as hotel management, destination management, house keeping, human resource development, he said. “By acquiring these skills and knowledge, Bangladesh will become a tourist destination soon”, he added.
The owner of the Rose Garden Palace, Laila Raquib, said: “Renovation work of this mansion is still going on. To preserve this heritage, I need more financial assistance from the government. The age of this building is more than 100 years, and the government is using this mansion to promote tourism.”
The Government of Bangladesh has declared 2016-2018 as "Visit Bangladesh Years" to promote tourism.
La Francophonie, an international organisation, was created in 1970 and has 80 member-states and governments, which together represent over one-third of the United Nation’s member-states.
The French high commissioner to Bangladesh, Sophie Aubert, and Bangladesh Tourism Board CEO Dr Mohammad Nasir Uddin also spoke at the event.
