BPL Governing Council member Sheikh Sohel on Tuesday said that they will soon resolve the alleged fixing accusations against Rangpur Riders’ player Jupitar Ghosh and its team manager Sanwar Hossain.
The allegations came to light when Rangpur Riders player Jupiter Ghosh lodged a written complaint against team manager Sanwar Hossain, saying that he was told by Sanwar to fix the result of the match.
Ghosh claimed in his complaint that he was dropped from the side after he refused to go through with the proposal.
Riders therefore suspended both Jupitar and Sanwar. The governing council also launched a probe after getting Jupitar Ghosh’s allegation at the time of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). But the issue is yet to resolve.
“Those, who are in BPL governing body, were busy in our back-to-back series. For this, we could not get together so many days,” said Sheikh Sohel, who is also the chairman of BCB logistic and disciplinary committee.
“We will take a quick step to resolve the matter in the aftermath of the series,” Sohel told media yesterday.
BCB director said that they will soon hold their meeting to begin the formal activities for the next BPL so that they could organise it without any big fault.
“We could not hold our meeting due to our hectic schedule of the back-to-back series. But we are planning to hold our first meeting on BPL just after the end of the ongoing away series against Sri Lanka so that we could start our formal activities and move forward as per our planning,” the logistic committee chairman informed.
“BPL is considered ‘the second best’ after IPL in terms of popularity and its global media coverage. We are always working for the development of the BPL. Hopefully more star players will come here to play the league in the next edition. Now we are going ahead with this planning,” he also said.
“To organise a big event, a few shortcomings might be happened. But we try to move forward by amending these shortfalls. There was less number of drawbacks in the last edition than its previous editions. We’ll try to arrange it in more wide range without shortfalls,” he added.
The fifth edition of the BPL is scheduled to roll onto the ground in the first week of November.
The first two editions were marred by match and spot fixing scam. A string of local and foreign players and officials were suspended for various terms. Recently the fixing scandal by some players in Pakistan Super League (PSL) rocked the cricket world.
When asked if there is any possibility of playing any tainted player in BPL, the disciplinary committee chairman said that they will not give any concession to any wrong-doer.
“We want to keep our BPL clear from all the indiscipline and irregularities. We didn’t give an inch concession to any wrong-doer because our ‘zero tolerance’ stance will always be there and remain in future against indiscipline,” he pointed out.
“Despite having our willingness, we could not give BPL match or matches in Khulna as we feel a bit unsecured. But we are trying to enlarge the stadium by the government. If we could do it, in that case, we could give some matches there in the next time,” Sohel told in response to a query.
He also said that they have plans to add Sylhet alongside Dhaka and Chittagong this year.
“Actually we had plans to give some matches in Sylhet in the last edition but there were some lacking in the ground. And so, all the matches of the league were held in these two cities,” he said adding “We have enough times to think about it.”
