The way Bangladesh have been performing for the last few years in both shorter and longer version and at home or in abroad has boosted the confidence and morale of the players alongside the team combination, BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon said yesterday.
He also believes that after such performances, especially after Sunday’s win over Sri Lanka in Bangladesh’s 100th Test match, every team will show their interest to play more with Bangladesh in their full strength.
“We have done our ground works --- what and how we will do in the next one year. Actually, we will play 10 Test matches within this period along with other formats of games. We have not got such chances to play so many Tests in the past,” he said.
“May be big teams did not take Bangladesh seriously. But from now on there is no doubt that every team will respect us, show their keen interest to play with us and field their full strength against Bangladesh. All the teams will see Bangladesh in a different way,” Papon told media at the South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban yesterday, where the three-day display of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 formally ended.
Bangladesh will tour next in England for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 following the tri-nation series (involving Ireland and New Zealand in May) after the conclusion of the ongoing away series against Sri Lanka.
Although their ultimate target is to be World Champions, the BCB president said they have ICC Champions Trophy ahead and are preparing themselves so that they could address the challenge of the extravaganza event in English condition.
“We have been doing so many things in an effort to do something new because our ultimate object is to be world champions. Now it’s not an easy matter to be the world champions. The best team can’t always be champions. But we have the spirit inside us. So we are preparing ourselves in that way,” Papon said.
“We have a challenge ahead of us in the Champions Trophy. You all know we are worried about what Bangladesh will do and how face the challenge in England soil. None can get advantage in England condition. Our grouping in Champions Trophy is tough,” he also said.
“But seeing their potential I couldn’t see any cause of fearing for our boys to play. The eagerness and faith for winning has been developed among the boys. I think a good team work that has been made in the team has often been witnessed. Sometimes it has been deviated. It might be happened as it’s young team, where fresh blood has come in,” he added.
The great thing is what he firmly believes that there is no team in cricket against what they will fear to play. He said explaining that it may be that we have not enough experience to play in England condition. Citing the tour in New Zealand, the BCB boss said they needed to tour in Australia, England and New Zealand on regular basis to make their habituation in these conditions.
“This time we did not play worse cricket in New Zealand. The performance we showcased we should win or draw one or two matches what I missed to grab the opportunity,” he said, adding “We have got an ample experience. I think if we could do our regular tour in the condition likes of Australia, England and New Zealand then Bangladesh must do better. They are not a team not to win.”
“Australia are slated to come here. They are seeking dates from us. But we have so many series and tournaments, which are clashing. But the tour still has on. They will come to tour in Bangladesh in scheduled time.
Meanwhile, the concluding ceremony of the ICC trophy display ended at the South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. It was earlier brought to Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium for former and current players, umpires, BCB officials to see the trophy.
UNICEF Bangladesh therefore organised a children’s event as part of its Cricket for Good initiative with the ICC. More than 20 children from Aparajeyo Bangladesh, an NGO run by UNICEF Bangladesh, took part in the event. Mithila Rahman and Forhad Hossain on behalf of UNICEF led by its deputy representative Sheema Sen Gupta handed over a sign-scripted bat to BCB chief executive Nizauddin Chowdhury.
