For Bangladesh, the cricket team is the nation’s collective expression of a country on the move. For us, the success of the team is the outlet of monumental triumphs in all spheres of our life: textiles, industry, media, and the economy in general. Each victory is etched in the minds of the cricket fan, ranging from the farmers who grow our food to the PM who leads the country; and, the pride goes beyond the borders, touching and inspiring the millions of Bangladeshis who work abroad.
For our countless overseas cricket supporters, the team is a proud reminder that if tigers on the field can do it then countless other tigers can also become victorious in their own respective challenges. The test victory against Sri Lanka, a formidable side in the game, at the 100th test by Bangladesh, is a milestone in many ways: it’s taking one huge step ahead in the game and on foreign soil. Hats off to Sri Lanka team for their sporting spirit.
Cricket’s surge forward is but a tale of the country moving towards prosperity, because, when in 1997, Bangladesh first qualified for the World Cup, the nation’s economic fabric was undergoing rapid transformation. Today, as the team of tigers are real tigers and not just in name, Bangladesh is poised to look forward to middle income status.
The aspiration of the whole nation is exemplified in the cricket team which has learnt to lose, go back and come again with renewed vigour and self-belief. Since 1971, it’s this resilience which has relentlessly provided us the courage to stand in front of political upheavals, natural disasters and demeaning snide remarks from others.
The nation has shed the bottomless basket epithet and the cricket team is today a threat to all top teams.
Bangladesh will one day win the World Cup – the dream is not something to dismiss or make fun of, it’s our destiny. The confidence is there, the never say die attitude is resolute and the country is firmly behind the tigers.
Winning is always delicious when it comes after defeats and, in the natural cycle of things, we will go on to lose some and win some more but when we will win, all the miseries of losing will wash away and the bitterness of faltering at the last moment will seem distant.
And at such a moment, in all areas of life we shall begin to hope and believe that, despite many obstacles we have come this far and, a lot far we will go. No one can suppress us!
