A four-day animation film festival tilted ‘Microsoft Animation Film festival 2017’ has begun at the TSC auditorium of Dhaka University. Dhaka University Film Society (DUFS) has organised the animation festival to popularise the animation films in the country.
Presided over by DU vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid inaugurated the festival yesterday as chief guest.
Prominent cartoonist Shishir Bhattacharjee, chairman of Television, film and photography department of DU Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan and Country Manager of Microsoft Bangladesh Sonia Bashir Kabir were present as special guests at the opening ceremony.
After the inauguration, four animated films—‘Penguins of Madagascar’, ‘Wall-E’, ‘Inside Out’ and ‘Corpse Bride’ were screened on the opening day yesterday.
Today, four animated films—‘April and the Extraordinary World’, ‘Mary and Max’, ‘Song of the Sea’, ‘Moana’ to be screened at 11am, 1:30pm, 4pm and 6:30pm respectively.
‘April and the Extraordinary World’ is a 2015 French-Belgian-Canadian animated science-fiction adventure film co-directed by Christian Desmares and Franck Ekinci, co-written by Ekinci and Benjamin Legrand, and starring Marion Cotillard. It depicts an alternate steampunk world with a visual style based on the work of French cartoonist Jacques Tardi.
‘Mary and Max’ is a 2009 Australian stop motion animated comedy-drama film written and directed by Adam Elliot as his first animated feature film with music by Dale Cornelius and produced by Melanie Coombs and Melodrama Pictures. The film won the Annecy Cristal in June 2009 from the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, and Best Animated Feature Film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards in November 2009.
‘Song of the Sea’ is a 2014 animated fantasy drama film directed and co-produced by Tomm Moore.
‘Moana’ is a 2016 American 3D computer-animated musical fantasy comedy adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is the 56th Disney animated feature film. The film tells the story of Moana, the strong-willed daughter of the chief of a Polynesian tribe, who is chosen by the ocean itself to reunite a mystical relic with a goddess.
A total of 15 animated films are being screened at the four-day festival while the entry fee for per show is Tk 30 only.
The film festival will continue till March 23. l
