More than 40 expelled BNP leaders, mostly former lawmakers, are awaiting calls from Khaleda Zia to return to the party and make it strengthened ahead of the next general elections, according to party insiders.
These leaders, most of whom were expelled for demanding reforms to the party rank and file
during the 1/11 changeover in 2007, expect that the party chief would call them very soon as part of her recent move to bring all such leaders back to the party fold.
Party leaders said Khaleda's initiative to re-integrate the expelled leaders in the party has already sent a positive signal to the people—the BNP is getting united by making the party organisation more vibrant and energetic.
It is not important whether these leaders will be given any post or nominations in the upcoming polls, they added saying “it is rather more important that their comeback in the party will help strengthen the party”.
As part of her initiative, Khaleda Zia had on February 24 summoned two former lawmakers—Sarder Sakhawat Hossain Bakul and Zahiruddin Swapan—to her Gulshan office and asked them to work for the BNP, keeping aside all differences.
She asked the party’s secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who was also present at the meeting, to communicate with each leader who remains outside the party orbit and to call them in phases to meet her. Fakhrul told The Independent on Sunday that bringing back the expelled leaders was under process.
“I have been contacted by the secretary general (Mirza Alamgir). I may be called any time. I'm waiting for her (Khaleda's) call,” said Dr Ziaul Haque, former BNP lawmaker of the Bogra-4 constituency.
Haque, a medical practitioner by profession, expressed belief that all leaders expelled from the party at different times would be brought back to the party soon.
Nazir Hossain, another former BNP lawmaker, said he is in touch with the party secretary general Mirza Alamgir
